Combined Insurance Reminds Men to Take Proactive Approach with Their Wellbeing During National Men's Health Month

GLENVIEW, Ill., June 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- June is National Men's Health Month. Combined Insurance, a leading provider of individual supplemental accident, disability, health, and life insurance products, and a Chubb company, is reminding men to take a proactive approach with their health and determining whether they are prepared for any unexpected health issues.

"June is the perfect month for National Men's Health Month. With the start of summer, more men are heading outdoors to engage in sports and recreational activities, or lengthy road trips/vacations, which brings with it the potential for injuries," says Doug Abercrombie, Senior Vice President and Chief Agency Officer at Combined Insurance. "Unfortunately, until they get sick or injured, some men don't think about their health, and that has to change."

Data from the 2015 Orlando National Health Survey support Abercrombie's statement, showing that only half of men in the United States could remember the last time they went to see a doctor for a checkup. This trend could present problems for men, considering that in the U.S.:

  • More than 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year (Men's Health Resource Center, 2016)
  • Between 70%-89% of sudden cardiac events occur in men (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2011-2013)
  • More than one out of every three men have some form of heart disease (American Heart Association, 2013)
  • The American Cancer Society projects 117,920 men will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016

Serious illnesses like these, or injuries from summer activities can lead to emergency room visits and hospital stays, which can be costly. According to the National Safety Council, the average hospital stay for a patient is five days and the average cost per stay is $35,000 (2014).

"Good diet, exercise and preventative care play a significant role in promoting and maintaining good health.  June provides an opportunity for men to reset goals, get back on track in fitness disciplines, or even change habits.  During National Men's Health Month, men should also evaluate their insurance coverage needs," says Abercrombie.

Nearly nine out of 10 men have some form of health insurance, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and health insurance will help cover the costs of medical treatment, including hospital stays and medicine. Even with major medical insurance, however, the medical and non-medical costs associated with treatment or recovery from an accident or sickness can be greater than an average family earns in a month.

Following a covered accident or sickness, supplemental insurance provides cash benefits paid directly to the policyholder who can use that money any way they see fit. The benefit can even be used to help cover the costs for medical treatment, including hospital admission, intensive care, outpatient surgery, and more. It can also be used to help pay for daily living expenses, such as groceries, mortgage, and utilities.

In addition to accident and sickness insurance, with the prevalence of lung and prostate cancer, men should also consider supplemental cancer insurance.  A supplemental cancer policy may help cover some of the costs associated with treatment and many such policies contain the following features:

  • pay cash benefits directly to the insured – in addition to any other insurance;
  • allows the customer to elect a benefit level that meets their needs – whether it's for individual or family coverage; and
  • maintain the same level of benefits, regardless of the customer's age.
